View 2010 Bike Route in a larger map
I bought a set of maps from the Adventure Cycling Association (ACA).
Their TransAm route goes from Yorkville, VA to Pueblo, CO and then either veers northwest to Astoria, OR or heads due west to San Francisco, CA (wich they call the Western Express). I opted for the latter course. Also, I bought a portion of their Atlantic Coast route to get me from New York City down to Ashland, Virginia to hook up with their westbound TransAm route.
Below are some of the mapped out routes I’ll be traveling. These are definitely NOT the shortest or least hilliest options! But, as they tend to stay off the major roads and on less-traveled country roads the traffic is light. (I made the mistake of NOT heeding their advice and short-cutted on a busy highway to save 30 miles. Not worth it! No shoulder and trucks whizzing by what seemed like inches from me! I was so stressed and tense that every muscle ached more than had I just stayed on the longer route!)
I left NYC via the George Washington Bridge into New Jersey. I then headed west a bit before heading south. Sorry, but ACA’s map for this section were too confusing so I didn’t post.
